Small, medium and large air fryers with samosas, paneer tikka and kebabs in an Indian kitchen

A 4-litre air fryer may be enough for a couple yet frustrating for a family of four. An 8-litre model may sound enormous but still offer two narrow drawers rather than one wide cooking surface. The right size depends on what you cook, how many pieces must fit in one layer and whether you mind running a second batch.

In many Indian kitchens, counter space is already being negotiated between the mixer grinder, pressure cooker and the appliance someone promised would be used every day. Buying the right capacity therefore means finding enough cooking area without bringing home a machine that needs its own postal address.

Quick answer: start around 4–4.5L for one or two people, a wide 5.5–6.5L basket for three or four, and a wide 7L+ or dual-basket machine for five or more. Treat these as starting points, then check the basket floor.

Why litres can be misleading

Litres describe volume. Air frying depends heavily on exposed surface and airflow. Food spread across one uncrowded layer generally browns more evenly than the same quantity stacked in a tall basket. A rounded drawer, raised handle mount or sharply tapered sides can reduce usable space without changing the headline capacity.

This matters for Indian snacks. Six full-size samosas need floor area. Paneer tikka needs gaps between pieces so moisture can escape. Kebabs need length. A high-volume cavity may accommodate a small chicken while still being awkward for flat or elongated foods.

Practical size recommendations

Household Starting size Best suited to Likely limitation
One person 3–4.2L Reheating, snacks, one meal portion Few full-size pieces per layer
Two people 4–4.5L Two paneer portions, compact kitchens Second batch for entertaining
Three to four Wide 5.5–6.5L Family snacks, tikka and mixed use Large batches can still require turning
Five or more Wide 7L+ or dual basket Two foods or larger quantities Combined dual-basket litres overstate each drawer

Single basket or dual basket?

A large single basket is usually more flexible for long kebabs, one large paneer batch or an even layer of samosas. Dual baskets are useful when foods need different temperatures or finishing times. Their advertised capacity is normally the combined volume, so check the capacity and dimensions of each drawer separately.

Estimate your real batch before buying

  1. Write down the food you expect to cook most often.
  2. Place a normal uncooked family batch on a dinner plate without overlapping it.
  3. Measure the approximate rectangle occupied by the food.
  4. Compare that footprint with the air fryer’s internal tray dimensions—not its external dimensions.
  5. If the manufacturer does not publish the tray size, inspect it in a store or look for a credible measurement of the exact model.

Capacity by Indian use case

Paneer tikka

A wider tray matters more than height. Crowding traps moisture and delays browning. For four people, a wide six-litre-class basket is a more realistic starting point than a compact four-litre model.

Samosas, pakoras and cutlets

Reheating requires less capacity than serving a fresh family batch because short second cycles are manageable. For parties, count full-size pieces per layer.

Kebabs

Check internal length and compatible skewer size. A circular or highly rounded basket may waste space around straight kebabs.

Whole chicken and baking

Here vertical clearance becomes more important, but also verify safe distance from the heating element and the manufacturer’s stated accessory guidance.

Do larger air fryers use more electricity?

A higher-wattage model draws more power while its heater is operating, but total energy depends on cooking time and cycling. A properly loaded large machine may be more efficient than running a small machine twice. Avoid buying far more capacity than you regularly use.

Our recommendation

For most Indian families of three or four, a wide 5.5–6.5L single basket is the safest general recommendation. Couples can save counter space and money with a good four-litre-class model. Choose a dual basket when simultaneous cooking is genuinely more valuable than one uninterrupted surface.
